Policy mixes exist in many policy areas in order to address complex, multifaceted problems. Conflicts arise as a result of the coexistence of different targets, instruments or design elements. The aim of this chapter is to provide an analytical framework to identify conflicts in policy mixes and to propose options to mitigate those conflicts. The coexistence between renewable energy support and CO2 mitigation policies is used to illustrate those negative interactions. The chapter highlights the conflicts between targets, individual instruments and design elements within this specific policy area and proposes policy recommendations in order to mitigate them.
