Abstract

In order to be a Great Power that has the status of a leader in international affairs, a country needs to hold the respect of other countries as well as the resources of power. In Russia’s case, the main resource of power has been its military. Through successful military operations (victories in wars), Russia has managed to gain and increase its Great Power status. The military has also been used in order to maintain already established status quos. These maintaining operations have not always been so successful, and declining military capabilities have also decreased Russia’s Great Power status. Therefore, the military’s role is significant in Russian Great Power identity – greatpowerness.
