For reproductive-aged women and girls in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), poor sexual and reproductive health outcomes contribute to one third of the total global burden of disease, and violence and unsafe sex continue to be major risk factors for death and disability. The global health agenda recognises this burden, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals highlight the need to address issues of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) under 2 of the 17 goals that focus on sexual and reproductive rights and access to SRH services. This chapter uses examples from a range of LMIC settings to discuss some of the ongoing challenges to improving the reproductive lives of women and their families and considers some interventions and service models that have been effective in making positive changes.
