Abstract

The idea of self-ownership lies close to the heart of libertarianism. The view affirms that each person, no matter their background, ethnicity, gender, or social or economic status has a right to live their own life as they see fit, consistent with the same rights for others. As self-owners, we do not need permission to take a certain job. As self-owners, we do not need permission to move to a different place. As self-owners, we can say no to those who want to touch us or use our bodies in ways we do not want.
