Abstract

Educators have long understood that effective teaching includes proactive efforts to connect home and school learning environments. Much of this understanding has been organized within a parent involvement rubric that has deep roots in the field of early childhood education. In recent decades, the idea of parent involvement has shifted to include emphasis on families as complex systems, mutuality in exchanges between teachers and parents, and the multidimensionality of family contributions to children’s learning. There is an increasingly sophisticated set of knowledge and skills for teachers to master in becoming productive partners with families.
