Abstract

As the number of early care and education programs for young children increase, attention has been focused on discussions of effective teachers and the pathways to preparing well-equipped, high-quality teachers for young children. Effective early childhood teachers contribute to building a solid foundation for children’s development and learning in the early years (Gormley, Gayer, Phillips, & Dawson, 2004; Schulman & Barnett, 2005). Recent research has highlighted the benefits of high-quality early experiences for young children and in contrast the poor, if not dangerous, outcomes for young children exposed to ineffective teachers in low-quality programs (Burchinal, Peisner-Feinberg, Bryant, & Clifford, 2000; LoCasale-Crouch et al., 2007).
