The interest amongst sport psychologists for career transitions grew gradually during the past three decades. From initial publications on the occurrence of (sub-)clinical problems amongst former professional athletes, the current topic developed into the well-established sub-domain of sport psychology integrating developmental, holistic and cultural perspectives on the career development of talented, elite, Olympic and former elite athletes (e.g., Alfermann & Stambulova, 2007; Bruner, Munroe-Chandler, & Spink, 2008; Pummell, Harwood, & Lavallee, 2008; Wylleman, Lavallee, & Theeboom, 2004).
