Abstract

Partly based on their long cultural and social history, and partly on their solutions to the social crises and conflicts of the 1900s, the Nordic countries have developed a social model of their own, known as the Nordic model of the welfare state. Education is part of the welfare state, but it is also a relatively independent institution.
