Abstract

All sound is paradoxically historical. On the one hand, sound can only manifest itself in the present, as vibrations in the air. On the other hand, however, sound is a trace of past activity. Action always precedes sound, which it is the result of. Sound is a residue of what has been happening and in a sense always too late.
