The Brazilian educational camp movement started in the 1940s and was strongly influenced by the camping culture of the American YMCA. The movement was organised by the Brazilian group ACM (Associação Cristã de Moços). Not until the 1990s, however, did these educational camps grow in popularity and became commercially managed. The Brazilian camping movement developed so rapidly during this period that an Association (Associação Brasileira de Acampamentos Educacionais) was created in 1999 to open dialogues among the different camp owners.
