Abstract

I engaged in the task of writing this chapter expecting to find in the literature on teacher perceptions about assessment at best a tale of disorder, at worst a uniform negativity. Any student who has mastered introductory statistics can tell you that with these expectations, I felt a sense of dread. If teacher perceptions are essentially disorderly and unpredictable, they have no explanatory power; this is also true if they are invariant, whether at the negative or positive end of the spectrum.
