Abstract

The first feminist scholarly wave of studying women in antiquity, and the sexual mores regulating their lives, began to take shape in the 1970s, around the same time as the revival of military historical interest in ancient warfare. Since then, studies of ancient warfare and of women and sexual mores in antiquity have generally proceeded as though the research findings in each field have little reason to be engaged with one another. 1
