Abstract

On initial consideration, it would seem that the occult and science fiction make problematic bedfellows. Not so fantasy, where magic, the operation of mysterious or demonic powers, or quests for arcane knowledge are commonplace. This ‘split’ between fundamentally opposing world-views – one that banishes the occult, and one that places it centre-stage – that are constitutive of the two genres is the starting point for Adam Roberts’ text The History of Science Fiction (2005), an extension and development of his earlier Science Fiction (2000), but one with very different emphases.
