Abstract

The idea that the world’s major religions are linked to some form of overarching perennial doctrine is not a new one. It was a view notably propounded in the English-speaking world by Aldous Huxley in his book, The Perennial Philosophy, first published in 1944 (Huxley, 2009). But the idea can be traced back to the fifteenth century and the ideas of Italian thinkers such as Bruno and Ficino (Sedgwick, 2004). However, the most important recent exponent of this idea can be found in the work of René Guénon and his followers in what has become known as Traditionalism (Sedgwick, 2004).
