Abstract

New Thought is a term that refers to a variety of religious expressions and movements with common roots in the mid-nineteenth-century United States. New Thought tenets and practices are premised on the idea that humans have within themselves all they need to connect with a larger, more perfect reality, and that creating and using this connection is a matter of using the powers of mind that all humans possess. This connection will allow individuals to heal themselves of physical and mental infirmities, deal with poor economic and social situations, and realize salvation through creating a happy, healthy, fulfilled life. Often couched in Protestant Christian language and practice, New Thought movements introduced teachings and rituals with esoteric elements to mainstream cultures.
