Abstract

This chapter will introduce person-centered planning, an approach to engage in individualized program and supports planning in the intellectual disability field that has been demonstrated through research to have positive impacts on outcomes (Claes, Van Hove, Vandevelde, van Loon, & Schalock, 2010). We will provide an overview of the history, purpose, and key components of person-centered planning. We will then discuss student-directed planning, differentiating it from person-centered planning and highlighting curricula to promote student involvement in educational and transition planning. Finally, we will discuss how person-centered and student-directed planning can be merged to promote valued outcomes in the context of education and transition planning for students with intellectual disability.
