Abstract

Material encounters between religion and popular culture involve physical objects: things we can play with, eat, hold, wear, or read without requiring electronic mediation. In this way, they are not new elements of culture but sometimes quite ancient. Nonetheless, they are all now created, produced, and marketed within the structures of modern popular culture, and so have evolved in distinctive ways as part of modern societies.
