Abstract

The study of “Religion and Popular Culture” is not entirely new, but at this writing it still lacks maturity in that few works exist which reflect with much subtlety on its methods or with any suggestion at a comprehensive approach to its contents. Of course, it is notoriously difficult to define its subject matter (as Chapter 1 makes clear), but it still seems legitimate to try to define the areas that might be involved and the issues and questions posed by them for the study of religion and popular culture. This volume attempts such a task, and so comprises a general introduction to this nascent area of study.
