Abstract

Without a proper focus, the expression public affairs can conjure a plethora of meanings, ranging from politics to international relations, war, public policies, urban questions, or health matters. Dictionary entries on public affairs vary greatly in the definitions they provide, from public relations to the relations between a company and the surrounding world, vaguely concluding that the term may be used to refer to public administration and even lobbying. More generally, public affairs is defined as “matters of general interest or concern, especially those dealing with current social or political issues.” 1 There are also those who define it as “the common knowledge of mass politics,” 2 which points toward a closer connection between public affairs and the political arena.
