Abstract

New Institutionalism (NI) has been an influential project in social science theory for over 40 years, with major impacts on disciplines as diverse as political science, sociology, economics, and geography. A number of these ideas have been taken up in planning theory, but this work is still at a relatively early stage with much still to be done. This chapter reviews the main currents in new institutionalist thought, outlines several ways in which these ideas have been developed in planning theory, and points to some paths forward.
