From the dawn of philosophical thinking, a central concern has involved physical survival in a hostile environment along with the observation that adversity often triggers latent capabilities for coping. Reich, Zautra, and Hall (2011) cite a quotation from Horace (~ 65–8 bc): “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents, which, in prosperous circumstances, would have lain dormant.”
