Abstract

A major part of the creative industries literature is on the discourse of how these industries contribute to the economy (Howkins 2007), positively affecting business climate (Florida 2002), enhancing the urban image and identity of a city/nation (Landry 2008), and increasing the spirit of innovation and creativity (Hartley et al., 2013). Meanwhile, what is less discussed is their potential cultural and social impacts (but see Said, 1993). In addressing this gap in the existing discourse of creative industries, this chapter explores how creative workers can spur alternative movements and mobilize resistance to social problems by utilizing their particular skills and tools.
