Abstract

From 1998 Indonesia entered a period of transition to democracy after experiencing 32 years of authoritarian government under Suharto’s New Order regime. A new political era called Reformasi emerged, ushering in social, political, and cultural change. With these changes, a new landscape for Indonesian cinema surfaced and was signified by the flourishing of film communities which have led to the revitalization and redefinition of independent filmmaking in Indonesia.
