Abstract

During the past decades, the creativity of the youth in Thailand has been underrated by the Thai pop music industry. This is by no means surprising as the powerful demands of the market and the commercial logic of music businesses have guided industry expansion to its the farthest corners. However, since the 1990s alternative music movement, Thai youngsters have increasingly accessed music production and cultural space. Therefore, this chapter seeks to understand the roles played by key institutions of the Thai music industry, such as record labels and music programs on radio and TV, and critically consider the broader dynamic in which the rise and development of indie music led by youngsters has been influenced by these institutions and, at the same time, shown potential to stimulate the development of the broader creative industries.
