Abstract

Insecurity and fear are two epistemological categories that are often perceived as interchangeable. The error here is that insecurity is difficult to separate from subjective “feeling”. When it is possible to distinguish objective security (such as recorded crime rates) from subjective security (perception of the seriousness of a crime among a particular group), the interdependence between insecurity and feeling becomes less clear. Even if an objective security context is relatively good, there can still be a high degree of fear. We expect that the opposite can also occur.
