Abstract

American psychoanalysis has recently passed its 100th anniversary. Psychoanalysis was brought to the United States in 1908, when Abraham Brill returned from Europe after studying with Bleuler and meeting Freud, and a year later in 1909, when Freud, Jung and Ferenczi traveled to Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, where Freud and Jung delivered lectures (the classic overview of psychoanalysis in the United States is Hale, 1971, 1995). The New York Psychoanalytic Society and the American Psychoanalytic Association were established shortly thereafter, both founded by Brill in 1911.
