This chapter provides a brief summary of qualitative research techniques commonly used in the study of environmental migration and displacement (EMD). Until fairly recently, qualitative case studies relying on ethnographic data collection methods were the most common approach to EMD research. However, the need to expand EMD research beyond the simple question of ‘why do people migrate’ demands a greater use of mixed method, integrated approaches to research.
