Abstract

Feminist activism and women’s movements in the global South have a long history of collaboration between Southern feminist activists. The flow of ideas, norms and ways of organising between Southern actors has shaped debates on women’s rights and feminist discourse at multiple levels. The role played by global feminist networks, particularly the collaborations and debates between Northern and Southern feminists is well documented. This chapter moves away from this focus on the global and explores how South–South collaborations take place between Southern feminist organisations. The chapter also explores the role played by Southern regional feminist networks and forums in shaping debates on women’s rights and their ability to influence the actions of Southern states and regional bodies. It highlights the strategies used and the regional sites where these feminist collaborations and contestations occur in shaping the priorities, agendas and strategies for gender justice in the global South. It also explores the future challenges these forms of activism face and gaps in existing research on feminist South–South collaborations.
