The advent of massive open online courses (MOOCs), educational games and simulations, computer-based tests, and other computational tools for learning and assessment means that the data available to learning scientists is growing exponentially (e.g., Fields & Kafai, this volume; G. Fischer, this volume). At the same time, the new fields of learning analytics, data mining, and data science more generally have proposed a range of statistical and computational approaches to analyzing such data, some of which are described elsewhere in this handbook (e.g., Rosé, this volume).
