Abstract

I (first author) have worked in this area for much of my professional career. One result is that some of the works that are mentioned in the chapter are in essay collections that I have co-edited or in the series on queenship and power that I co-edit with Charles Beem. I have tried to be as objective as possible about scholarship with which I am directly involved. I am deeply grateful to Jo Eldridge Carney and Elaine Kruse for their help with this chapter, to my graduate students in my Tudor/Stuart history class for their help in guiding me to useful works and to the UCARE programme at the University of Nebraska that allowed me to have Alicia Meyer as my research assistant.
