Abstract

Most Americans (i.e. US) believe strongly in the great potential of the young child, and this has been the case throughout our country’s history. Early care and education (ECE) in the US has evolved as an institution to serve national and economic goals, as it has sought to remain responsive to changing family and community needs and aspirations. It is a complex, multi-sectorial, and diversified field with strengths and challenges, and it has been shaped by cultural and historical factors, as has been the case with countries around the world, as discussed in other chapters of this volume.
