This chapter gives a brief synopsis of the history of the revival of the Cornish language, but focuses particularly on the debates around orthography and the more recent changes that have come with recognition and a degree of professional input. It considers the impact of change from an entirely voluntary, unfunded movement to public sector recognition and support, with subsequent public accountability, and the impact on the grass-roots movement. The policy context and lack of legislation governing Cornish is looked at, and the chapter finishes by considering the possible impact of the recent withdrawal of funding by central government and the changes in infrastructure.
