Abstract

In this final chapter Simon and Steve set out their top takes on the chapter themes and ideas and look to the future. The future is not clear. There have been many missteps with indicators and indices and we now know that there is a future which finds indicators in confusion, which confounds the integrity of factual measurement with Fake News and Un-truth. We tend to a more optimistic scenario, one which sees the opportunity for indicators and indices to act with greater and greater degrees of particularity to specific human issues while retaining the unambiguous capacity to promote important news and messages at a global scale. But at this time (late 2017) the future is far from clear and a new generation of practitioners will need to be active in promoting a positive outcome.
