The chapter assesses Russia’s participation in the Group of 20 (G20) and argues that Russia has been an active participant in the organization since it was founded in 1999. For Russia, the G20 served as a vehicle for status, economic modernization, and integration into the world economy. More recently, Russia’s interest in the organization has declined due to its slow progress in promoting significant global economic governance reforms and is insufficient in satisfying Russia’s status aspirations of a great power on a par with the US, China and (up until recently) the EU. Moscow, nevertheless, continues to value the G20’s importance and potential in transforming the contemporary political and economic system in the world.
