Media and cultural practices represent a central component of civil society engagement. These practices intervene in the process of meaning production and form publics that can promote social and cultural change. Alternative media and participatory cultural practices are of seminal importance to the production of critical publics. In recent decades, social movement and communication scholars have offered a range of conceptual frameworks to define the different purposes, processes and contents of alternative media. Studies on alternative media have increasingly focused on the use of digital media and the development of new modes of expression, communication and networking. While they mainly examine the micro-level of practices of media production and activism, the focus of our contribution is on the relationship between alternative media and the multiplicity of publics.
