Terrorism is a topic that has been attracting considerable attention for some years now. It is a complex, multidimensional phenomenon that has, unfortunately, been distorted and oversimplified in a number of ways, not least because of (i) the extensive media coverage and the associated “soundbite” mentality; and (ii) the highly emotionally charged tenor of much of the discussion of the issues involved. In this chapter our intention is to try to get past the distortions and oversimplifications in order to develop at least a basic understanding from a sociological perspective of the significance of terrorism in general and in relation to death, grief, and bereavement in particular.
