Abstract

This essay explains that although there are religious origins to core libertarian journalistic principles such as the Fourth Estate and press freedom, there has been evidence that journalism has lost its moral compass in recent decades. The chapter proceeds to explain the basic principles of a Buddhist-influenced “mindful journalism”; explores its similarities with – and differences from – mainstream journalism approaches and related alternatives such as peace journalism, inclusive journalism and civic journalism; demonstrates how the principles have been applied in two case studies; and makes some suggestions for further development of the model.
