Abstract

Dance is an art form that is intrinsic to what it means to be human in many cultures. Expressivity of the human soul takes shape through the ages in dance and continues to find form in contemporary articulations of dance. This essay touches on some of the important ways dance has connected to spirituality and how it has infused a variety of fields within the social sphere, including education, therapy, performance, somatic studies, and well-being. Intrinsic to this essay is a deeper understanding of the importance of the body and physicality as a space for the connection and expression of humanity, spirituality, and the relationships between living, being, and creating. I invite the reader to consider what I call the “bodysoul” as a way to connect body, dance, and movement to the infinite, numinous both within and without. Future directions include befriending the body as a place to listen to our deep lives and bring dance to our living.
