Abstract

In the Hallidayian tradition, the verbal group is a class of unit at group/phrase rank generally co-extensive with the Process in the experiential structure of the English clause, with Finite + Predicator in the interpersonal structure, and with part of the Rheme in the textual (thematic) structure. As is well known, each of these functional components in structure is assumed to contribute in turn to the realisation of features in key metafunctionally diversified clause systems – process type, mood and theme, respectively. In addition, the verbal group in English is described as the entry condition for a number of systems located below the clause, such as tense, voice, polarity and modality (Halliday and Matthiessen 2014).
