This chapter considers some of the challenges to metropolitan governance in contemporary Paris. It first traces the recent history of state decentralization by identifying key conflicts constitutive of urban political authorities. It then demonstrates how these long-standing dynamics have shaped the development of the Métropole du Grand Paris (MGP), a new metropolitan institution that has been active since 2016.
