This chapter examines the state of poverty in the suburban or “unplanned areas” of Greater Cairo using panel data. The case study clarifies that the predominant feature of poverty in these areas is transient poverty, which implies that the residents are vulnerable to small changes either in demographic dimension such as growing household size, or caused by external economic shocks such as price increases.
