Abstract

This chapter traces the ways health psychology has grown as a field and highlights key areas where research has bloomed. Specifically, the chapter traces the strong use of the biopsychosocial model in the field and expands this to focus on culture, proposing a new biopsychosociocultural approach for the field. The chapter illustrates how the new model can advance work on health disparities and aid research and intervention development. Research crosses levels of analysis, and interdisciplinary health psychology work is flourishing. The chapter also draws attention to areas of emphases such as aging, obesity, sleep, and sexual health, and emerging areas in the field such as work on genomics, military veterans, and digital technologies.
