Abstract

[Abstract: This chapter discusses perennial philosophy as a worldview of holistic education. In particular, this chapter addresses Toshihiko Izutsu’s reconstruction of Eastern philosophy and then introduces the idea of five dimensions of reality that integrates Eastern thoughts, such as Vedanta, Buddhism, and Taoism into the current discussion of holistic education. Since Eastern perspectives regard enlightenment as a spiritual realization, holistic education is defined as an education for enlightenment. Furthermore, it is important to include contemplation as a basic practice of holistic education. This chapter focuses on the way of awareness, relying on such thinkers as the Buddha, Krishnamurti, Nisargadatta Maharaj, and Aldous Huxley.]
