Let me give full credit at the outset of this chapter to Louise Rosenblatt's legacy as an educator. No one in the history of literature education—not James F. Hosic, not Arthur Appleby, not Mortimer Adler or Alan Purves or Judith Langer or Deborah Appleman or my mentor, Julie Jensen—has had a more positive influence on the teaching of literature than Louise Rosenblatt. If her only accomplishment had been to cause English teachers around the world to ask students what they thought a text meant and then to use those ideas as material in the building of understanding within a class, that alone would be enough to assure her place in history, and to thank her.
