This chapter explains the current context of Laos, recent developments in its civil society sector, the impact of international intervention and foreign direct investment, and the future prospects of Lao civil society. Kunze posits that, given the country’s political and economic circumstances and how they are intertwined with direct investment from countries with a similarly restricted civil society, there is little incentive and, therefore, little expectation for the restrictive environment to change significantly.
