This chapter examines civil society in Singapore, which is often considered to be an electoral authoritarian regime—a remarkable exception in the developed world, where economic development was not accompanied by political liberalization and democratization. Citing the development of civic activism in the areas of: (1) migration; (2) religion, secularism, and morality; and (3) conservation, Koh and Soon demonstrate the energies that animate civil society in Singapore.
