Hume is an experimental philosopher who attempts to understand why we think, feel, and act as we do. But how should we evaluate the adequacy of his science of human nature? This chapter examines Hume’s proposals from the perspective of our best available theories and evidence. It argues that Hume’s positive account of the workings of the mind receives a good deal of empirical support from interdisciplinary work in the cognitive sciences.
