Abstract

This chapter describes how papermaking can be a valuable means for transformation, healing, and recovery. Content highlights the origins of papermaking, the value of handmade expression and handcrafted creation to enhance well-being, and some of the therapeutic qualities behind the papermaking process. Benefits and challenges of implementing papermaking in health care and community-based settings are also described. Case examples of papermaking workshops with veterans in substance abuse recovery as well as eating disorder survivors are presented to help offer additional insight into the process and how papermaking can be used as a vehicle for art therapy.
