Abstract

This chapter extends previous work on service user and carer involvement (SUCI) and an outcomes-based model of SUCI in social work education at the University of Dundee, Scotland (Levy et al., 2016) to offer new thinking on the topic. Social pedagogy’s Head, Heart and Hands is used to frame discussion of the model to demonstrate how collaborative learning between service users, carers and social work students is preparing students for future person-centred and relationship-based practice (Cabiati, 2017). The chapter has uniquely been co-authored by a social work lecturer, MSc Social Work student, recent graduate/newly qualified social work practitioner and a carer, and is in three main sections. First, the literature on SUCI in social work education provides a context for the chapter, with a focus on SUCI leading to social change framed by social pedagogy. Second, the Caring within Integrated Services module (Caring module) is introduced. This is a core module on the MSc Social Work, a qualifying social work programme at the University of Dundee.
