Abstract

A program of research consists of a coherent and compelling vision and agenda for scholarship that focuses on a narrow range of core themes. Developing a program of research is very important, mainly because few studies have a profound impact on the field on their own. Despite its importance, at the current time, little has been written for prospective and new scholars on how to develop a program of research in school psychology. The purpose of this chapter, therefore, is to provide important information on the development of programs of research for prospective and early-career scholars. In this chapter, each of the authors addresses the same set of topics related to developing a program of research. After this, their responses are compared and contrasted, and specific recommendations and words of advice are provided for those who wish to establish their own program of research. Following these recommendations will not only assist early-career scholars in establishing their program of research, but the results of their programmatic research will be much more likely to improve the quality of school psychological services that are delivered to children and youth, families, schools, and communities.
